After earning a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering in Turkey, and a Bachelor’s in Business with a MBA in Marketing  in The Philippines, Sel travelled to Jacksonville, Florida, where he has resided since 2002.
As the son of two teachers, Sel has always been passionate about education and decided to pursue that through his career. Sel founded River City Science Academy (RCSA) in 2007, which became the first Charter school in Duval County to earn an A-grade from the Department of Education. RCSA has continued to grow to four campuses and is as a great school choice for many Duval County families.
Throughout his time in Jacksonville, Sel has served on the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission as Vice Chair and Commissioner, the GlobalJax board as Vice President and Delegate, as an advocate for OneJax, an Advisory Board Member for Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Transparency Committee, and Vice Chair of the FBI Civil Rights Steering Committee. He is part of Leadership Jacksonville’s Class of 2019.

Sel is known throughout the Jacksonville community for being a strong leader. He and his wife, Angie, began hosting Friendship & Gratitude Dinner’s every night at their house during the month of Ramadan. In 2018, they hosted over 250 friends, regardless of their race, sexual preference, political view, age, and faith. For many, this was their first opportunity to come together with strangers of all ages and backgrounds and celebrate a tradition that they may not be that familiar with. The nights consisted of encouraging conversation about the Jacksonville community and many left feeling inspired to work towards a better Jacksonville.
