After earning a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering in Turkey, and a Bachelor’s in Business with an MBA in Marketing in The Philippines, Sel traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, where he has resided since 2002.
As the son of two teachers, Sel has always been passionate about education and decided to pursue that through his career. Sel co-founded River City Science Academy (RCSA) in 2007, which became the first Charter school in Duval County to earn an A-grade from the Department of Education. RCSA has continued to grow to five campuses and is a great school choice for many Duval County families.
Sel is active in many community organizations. He is a graduate of the Leadership Jacksonville Class of 2019. He has served on the Mayor’s Asian American Advisory Board, the Read it Forward Jacksonville Coalition Board, and more. He now serves as the Vice-Chair of the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission, Vice President of GlobalJax, and is a board member with the Jax Chamber Government Affairs Committee, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, Downtown Jacksonville Rotary Club, Jacksonville Public Education Fund’s Parents Who Lead Advisory Board,  and many more.
Sel is known throughout the Jacksonville community for being a strong leader. He and his wife, Angie, began hosting Friendship & Gratitude Dinner’s every night at their house during the month of Ramadan. Since 2007, they have hosted as many as 3,000 people in their homes. For many, this is their first opportunity to come together with strangers of all ages and backgrounds and celebrate a tradition that they may not be that familiar with. The nights consist of encouraging conversation about the Jacksonville community and many leave feeling inspired to work towards a better Jacksonville.
